What is a Manitoba Canoe & Kayak Center?

A recreational and competitive canoe and kayak center run by the Manitoba Paddling Association and volunteers from your community, with support from Sport Manitoba

What Can I expect at a Canoe & Kayak Center?

There are paddling programs for ages 8 through 80, for beginners, advanced paddlers and everyone between. You can store your Canoe/kayak at selected clubs, or you can rent a canoe or kayak. The emphasis is on fun & safety. We specialize in Olympic Style canoeing and kayaking.

What is Olympic Style Canoeing & Kayaking?

It is an Olympic sport, done on lakes and slow moving rivers. It features races as short as 200 meters, or as long as 35 kilometer. The boats are designed for straight ahead speed - not eskimo rolls & white water. It's enjoyed as a low impact fitness activity.

What happens when you try it the first time?

You learn in small groups, or in individual lessons from Nationally Certified coaches. Lifejackets, paddles and boats are provided, with an emphasis on safety, equipment care, basic strokes, and most of all FUN! The boats are stable and easy for the beginning paddler to learn in, guaranteeing early success. A small fee ($10.00) may be charged to cover personal insurance, equipment care and instructor fees. The fee goes towards any further programs you take. (fees are negotiable for larger groups).

What's next?

A more lengthy session where you learn more about paddling and caring for canoes and /or kayaks. Specific programs are designed for youths, adults, competition, fitness or recreation. There are opportunities to compete and train throughout North America!!!

Who can Paddle?

Anyone who enjoys the outdoors and wants to give paddling a try. Paddlers as young as 8, and the young at heart over 80

Is it safe?

Absolutely! The instructors are fully certified. You paddle on calm lakes or slow moving rivers. ALL beginners wear lifejackets and are closely supervised. NO ONE paddles alone.

Is it difficult to learn?

NO! Our instructors are great! Boats are easy to learn in, and you paddle in calm, safe surroundings

Do I have to know how to swim?

NO, but let your instructor know. They will take special precautions.

What do I wear?

Wear weather appropriate old clothes & shoes. (you might get a bit wet & muddy)

What else do I bring?

A change of clothes and shoes (we usually get a little wet) a signed waiver form and the required fee (programs).

What does the fee cover?

Your fee covers your personal insurance & the necessary equipment & instruction
