Team Toba

Sprint Canoe & Kayak

What they do

Team Toba Sprint Canoe & Kayak is a performance-focused paddling group that trains athletes in Olympic-style canoe and kayak racing. It’s the next step for athletes moving on from the Youth Development Team, offering more structured, high-intensity training for those ready to commit to competitive paddling. While the sport is fun and rewarding, it also demands regular practices, strength training, and the discipline to push through tough workouts both on and off the water.

Team Toba athletes race at provincial and national levels, often representing Manitoba at events like the Canada Games. It’s a challenging program designed for paddlers who want to grow as athletes and teammates, take their racing seriously, and strive for personal and competitive success.

Competitions

Team Toba competitive athletes are highly encouraged to participate in provincial and out-of-province competitions. The list of competitions can be found here. Athletes that make the team roster may be eligible for provincial funding.

Practice Schedule

Athletes are encouraged to attend a minimum of 3-5 practices/week, during the summer, for optimal skill development. Interested athletes may train more often, up to twice daily, depending on their level of commitment. During the winter, athletes are encouraged to continue training with the team; through various off-water activities such as running, weight training, paddling machine, cross country skiing and more!

Spring Training Camp

Each spring, the team will travel to a warmer destination for a 4 week on-water training camp, which overlaps school spring break. Spring training is the best way for athletes to get a head start on the paddling season and is highly beneficial for them. In previous years, the training camp has been held in the Portugal, Italy and USA.

Ages 12 and older are welcome to attend, provided they can paddle a minimum of 6km without stopping or capsizing. Younger paddlers may also attend provided their club coach feels they are mature enough and physically capable of participating with the others at the camp. Parents are welcome should they wish to attend and are required to attend if the athlete is younger than 12.

Turning people into paddlers, athletes into champions, one adventure at a time!

Youth Developmental Group

Sprint Canoe & Kayak

The Youth Development Team is where young paddlers—typically aged 8 to 18—take their skills to the next level! It’s the ultimate training ground for future champions, where athletes paddle faster, race harder, and make lasting friendships.

With dedicated and experienced coaches leading the way, athletes learn proper technique, build strength, and develop the mindset of a true competitor. Whether you're new to paddling or already love the sport, this team is a perfect place to grow. It’s not just about racing—it’s about becoming a well-rounded athlete, having fun on the water, and maybe even dreaming of one day representing your country!

  • Sprint Canoe

  • Sprint Kayak

  • Dragon Boat

  • Marathon Canoe

  • Stand-Up Paddleboard
    ...and more!

Training isn’t just on the water—athletes also play games like soccer and relays to build fitness and teamwork on land.

  • Indoor paddling machines

  • Strength training exercises

  • Out-of-province competitions: As skills improve, athletes may travel to races in other provinces to take on new challenges.

  • Fundraising: The youth developmental team and provincial team will often team up and fundraise a few times a year. The funds will help lower the cost of trips and uniforms for athletes.
